ABSTRACT

The plant Murraya koenigii is used in folklore medicine to treat various diseases including diabetes mellitus, GIT and CNS disorders. In this study, the potentials of the ethanolic leaf extract on CNS complications (neuropathy) in diabetic rodents were evaluated using alloxan induced diabetes in Swiss albino mice. The extract was prepared with 70% v/v of ethanol and the alloxan induced diabetic mice were treated with the extract for 7 days after which their fasting blood glucose and the locomotor activity by Actophotometer and motor co-ordination by rota-rod were analysed. The 50, 100 and 200mg/kg of the extract significantly reduced the blood glucose, significantly increase the locomotor activity (score) and fall off time. It was concluded that the ethanolic leaf extract of Murraya koenigii possesses the dose dependent protective effect on CNS complications induced by diabetes.
