ABSTRACT

Transdermal route is promising alternative to drug delivery for systemic effect. Vesicular drug delivery systems are opening a new door for Transdermal drug delivery. The vesicular system as liposomes, niosomes, transferosomes, pharmacosomes and ethosomes are used to improve the therapeutic index of both existing and new drug molecules by encapsulating an active medicament inside vesicular structure in one such system. Encapsulation of the drug in vesicular structures is one such system, which can be predicted to prolong the existence of the drug in systemic circulation, and reduce the toxicity, if selective uptake can be achieved. Such different systems are widely used in gene delivery, tumor targeting to brain, oral formulations, in stability and permeability problems of drugs. These vesicular systems were found to be more effective as they render controlled release of drug due to depot formation in skin and some were more effective in transdermal delivery. Vesicular formulations shows better therapeutic results as compared to conventional formulations and it has been expected that in upcoming years more vesicular formulations would find their place in therapeutic world. In this review article we really focused on different aspects of vesicular system in terms of its advantages, drawbacks and applications of vesicular system as novel drug delivery.
