Phytochemical determination and evaluation of antioxidant potential of leaves of Moringa concanensis

ABSTRACT

The present study investigated the phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential of leaves of Moringa concanensis Nimmo. Mature leaves were collected from Kota, Rajasthan, in March 2026 and authenticated at the Herbarium, Department of Botany, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, under Authentication No. RUBL22127. The leaves were separately extracted with water, methanol and petroleum ether 1. The maximum extractive yield of methanolic extract was 246mg/g of dry weight, followed by aqueous extract (123mg/g) and petroleum ether extract (22mg/g). Preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of carbohydrates and flavonoids in all three extracts. Proteins, tannins and alkaloids were found in water and methanol extracts, and phytosterols were observed in all the extracts. The methanol and petroleum ether extracts contained saponins and terpenoids, whereas only the aqueous extract contained glycosides. DPPH free radical scavenging assay was performed to determine antioxidant activity at different concentrations (20-100 µg/ml). All extracts showed antioxidant activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Maximum activity was found in the methanolic extract at most concentrations tested (9.23 ± 1.71% to 25.73 ± 5.66% for 20 µg/mL to 100 µg/mL, respectively) with an IC 50 value of 210.15 µg/mL. The IC50 values of aqueous and petroleum ether extracts were 227.41 and 286.48 μg/mL, respectively. The results indicated that methanol was the best solvent among the solvents used for the extraction of phytochemicals from M. concanensis leaves with antioxidant activity and the presence of diverse phytochemical constituents. Further studies are required to identify the active compounds responsible for the observed activity.
